1. Duplicate Content
This is a big problem most of the website owners face. Even after knowing the penalties associated with the duplicate content, some web pages ignore it and target each other’s content to get the same search positions. During crawling of the web pages, Google filters one as original while penalizing the other one.
Solution: To solve this problem and to guide Google in the selection of the duplicate page that has to be ranked, you can use rel=canonical attribute.
2. Meta Descriptions
The Meta description is a short paragraph of around 35 words that is used in the HTML to describe the content on the page. The short description helps the online visitors get an idea of the website and its offering as it is shown on the search pages under the URL of the website.
As per a research conducted by SEMrush, around 30 percent of the websites have duplicate Meta description and nearly 25 percent completely miss it.
Solution: You should write original and attention grabbing Meta descriptions for each page. Focus on keywords, major offerings of your business and the audience.
3. H1 Tag Issues
Most of the website owners get confused between H1 tags and title tags and use them inaccurately. For your information, the title tag is what appears in search results whereas H1 tag is what you use on your web page.
Solution: The right technique is to use one H1 tag on every page and break up the content with a number of H2 tags.
4. Broken Links
As per a research of around 1,00,000 websites, around 35 percent of the sites had broken internal links and 25 percent had broken external links. Broken links, whether internal or external affect your rankings and website authority.
Solution: There are different tools to check crawl errors which you can use to fix the problem and build strong internal and external links.
5. Low Word Count
With the changes in Google algorithm and so many updates, it now gives more preference to in-depth content. Google categorize other low word count content as thin content and rank them low.
Solution: You should focus on evergreen content that retains its value always. Write in-depth content that offers value to the readers and sits at the top of Google searches forever.
By paying attention to these small issues you can easily prevent your website from the Google penalty and can rank at the top in the search engines.
